De Mare Nostrum conferentie is gekoppeld aan de thematiek van de Mare Nostrum tentoonstelling, namelijk de opkomst van massatoerisme in kuststreken. Het doel van deze tweedaagse conferentie is te onderzoeken hoe toeristische exploitatie van kustgebieden en de daarmee gepaard gaande economische groei kan samengaan met het behoud van lokale culturele en landschappelijke waarden.

Tijdens de eerste dag van de conferentie zullen de teams van de gastcuratoren de resultaten van hun onderzoek in een besloten bijeenkomst aan elkaar presenteren.

Publieke bijeenkomst: Op zaterdag 28 mei, gedurende de tweede dag komen deskundigen zoals beleidsmakers, touroperators, projectontwikkelaars, futuristen, wetenschappers bijeen in een Panel of Experts. Vanuit hun professionele achtergrond zullen zij reageren op de ontwerpvoorstellen van de gastcuratoren. Vervolgens zullen ontwerpers en 'experts' met elkaar discussiëren onder leiding van Bart Lootsma.
